Hopefully in two years I’ll be able to pick up a Cayman S, ideally in this green-over-tan spec. Until then I’ll keep playing with my friends cars, like the $500 944 that received a tuneup and good shakedown run after being abandoned in a field (video below).

Your lamentations of maintaining fancy Toyotas makes me wonder how much you could possibly enjoy maintaining a fancy Beetle.

My opinions on things are heavily colored by expectation. My expectations on a low mileage Toyota I paid too much for are going to be far different than, say, my expectations for a $500 hooptie hybrid Honda.

I cannot believe the deal he got on that, I’m looking forward to the video where it gets a full de tailing, you can already tell that the paint is going to clean up nice.
Personally, though, I’ve already decided that the next vintage car I buy will not have a radiator, or water pump, or heater core, or coolant lines, or lots of power accessories, much less aggravation that way. Unless I can find a Shay Model A replica dirt cheap, then everything else goes out the window.

I dig the Cayman S and it would certainly be on my short list.

The more experience I get with exotic/high end cars the less impressed I become with them except for Porsche. Rolls? Audi? McLaren? Lamborghini? Thoroughly clapped out by $50k. Ferraris hold up alright over time but they’re far beyond the average heathen for maintenance , and I haven’t liked any of those since the 90s. Porsche, though? Porsche... regularly seen touching 200k, honestly engineered cars that will take a track beating without a whimper, few and well documented issues, interiors that hold up astonishingly well over time, and reasonably priced.

Porsches look great in dark green.
As a 987 alumnus, you can do no wrong with those cars...supremely well-built and everything feels like quality even if it’s not exactly the fanciest equipment

Not to add to your pain but this was the other one I was looking at, also had a full leather interior. More $$$ but fewer miles and less interior wear.

Porsches have always been driver's cars - one of the few high end brands where owners are actually proud of showing off their high mileage figures, as opposed to Ferrari owners, who seem to be in competition to use their cars as little as possible. They might be costlier and more labor intensive to keep on the road than a Corvette, but they are meant to be on the road.

I’m itching to get into a Porsche again. Just don’t know when it’ll be.

I’m also on the path to a first Porsche, but I follow the advise to buy the oldest Porsche you can afford.
For me that is probably a clean Longhood 911T, a 911S or 911E needing repairs, or a 356.
